REAP THE WHIRLWIND

And Other Stories

Mark Timlin

A recently-discovered, long-lost novel and short stories from the 90s featuring private eye Nick Sharman

Follow Sharman as he patrols his seedily glamorous South London beat, with its cast of villains, eccentrics, misfits and losers. A magnet for trouble, even when he is on holiday in the country, he has a habit of inadvertently ending up on the wrong side of the law and at the wrong end of a shotgun. In this high-risk world, people are seldom what they seem and nothing can be taken for granted.

PRESS REVIEWS FOR Reap the Whirlwind

'intriguing stories deftly delivered, deliciously playful use of language, bags of energy, wry humour and plenty of hard edges... a real treat for hardboiled crime fans'
- Paul Burke, NB Magazine

'Timlin's brainchild continues to offer gritty, entertaining escapism'
- AP, Buzz Magazine

' Timlin's talent for pithy, colloquial short stories was always underrated... Here again he demonstrates his craft and makes us realise how much we have missed Sharman'
- Maxim Jakubowski, CrimeTime

'Sardonic. Sharp as the smell of cordite and slick as fresh oil on a nickel-plated Colt automatic - think Philip Marlowe in the opening paragraph of The Big Sleep'
- South Wales Argus

'The whole thing moves with pace, verve and wit; 170 pages of hi-energy pared-down prose, laced with episodes of explosive action'
- Bob Cornwell, Crime Time

'Timlin adds a damned fine story to augment the dry wit'
- Ali Karim, Shots Mag

'Few have come close to visualising the true blackness at the heart of crime - but Mark Timlin is one of them'
- Jon Wise, Sunday Sport

FULL disclosure: Your humble reviewer is a 'till I die' fan of the late, great Derek Raymond, the cerebral master of Brit noir who created the nastiest bits of work ever to walk the foul streets of his fiction. Few have come close to visualising the true blackness at the heart of crime - but Mark Timlin is one of them.
He created ex-cop and private 'tec Nick Sharman, a character good enough to get himself a TV series, based on a solid set of grimly brilliant books.
Reap the Whirlwind is one that got lost, it seems. A rock hard novella that compresses all that's bad in the baddest in south London.
Violence is never far from Sharman, usually in the form of money-hungry bastards who dominate the manor. They've no qualms about doing serious harm, but Sharman is one who can give as good as he gets.
The crims are beyond salvation but Sharman is a rough diamond with at least a hint of a soul.
Get through this and there are two more stories which lovers of hard-boiled yarns will, well... love.
You like settling down with a cosy Agatha Christie? You might want to give this excellent slab of grit a miss.

Jon Wise, Sunday Sport
